It’s time for a
Yarn & Fiber Contest and Fund raiser !!
Send our Singers
to Carnegie Hall
The chorus I sing with (Olympia Choral Society) has been invited to sing at Carnegie Hall in May of 2010. (drum roll…. Yes THE Carnegie Hall). We have been gifted with the incredible honor due to the fabulous skills of our director, Terry Shaw, who has been invited to guest conduct there.
In order to
accomplish this, we need to fund raise about $150,000, to take our entire
group. And thus, I thought it might be fun to hold a Yarn & Fiber Contest.
Here’s the way it
will work:
I am raiding my
personal “stash” for the most choice of
goodies, and have also received many wonderful donations from my dear
fiber/yarn pals who own their own businesses. Each week, beginning today I will
post more of the prizes. (and there is a “prizes album” over on the right where
you may view them all as they are posted)
For every $10.00
you donate, you will receive one chance to win a prize. (winners will be drawn
by random number generator on May 26th)
All donations are
TAX DEDUCTIBLE, since Olympia Choral Society (OCS) is a full non-profit
organization.
How to donate:
Leave me comment
on my blog, and let me know that you would like to donate, and I will email you
as to where to mail your checks. Checks need to be made out to Olympia Choral
Society (OCS).
At the end of the
contest, May 26, 2009, the winners will be announced on this blog.
Here are the first few prizes to tempt you:
a $25 gift certificate to Dicentra Designs Etsy Shop. You may select anything you would like from her shop !! Incredible colors !
3 individual $10 gift certificates to Anne Hanson's lovely shop Knitspot.
You may select anything from her shop - these patterns are amazing.
2 skeins Bam Huey in the colorway Heartsong. From the Etsy shop Bunny Patch. Cheryl hand dyes and handspins this incredible glorious yarn.
2 skeins Bunny Patch in colorway Joseph's Coat. (again from Cheryl's Etsy Shop Bunny Patch. handspun, hand dyed.
More prizes will be shown each week... and you can view them all as they are posted in the album over on the right of my blog))
Why should you
donate to this wonderful choral group?
(other than having
a chance to win wonderful fibery prizes, of course)
Olympia Choral Society (OCS) was founded about 10 years ago by our director, Terry Shaw. What began as 18 singers, has now grown to about 90. Our performances are normally standing room only, and we sing to approximately 2700 people each season.

OCS is a
non-profit organization which performs two concert seasons each year. Our
concerts are free to all, and after we sing, we accept donations. The funds
raised are then donated to charitable organizations. Over the years, OCS has
donated more than $70,000 to charities such as Battered Women’s Shelter, Children’s
Hospital, Garden Raised Bounty, Free Medical Clinic, Musical Scholarships and
many others (see our website on the link above for more specific details)
Our members range
in age from about 17 years old to almost 80 (I very politely did not ask
anyone’s exact age..)
We truly love to
sing. It is a marvelous gift that our joy of making music benefits all these
charities.
Vocalists audition
for the much coveted places in the chorus, and each musician pays for their own
music. And now we have the dream opportunity of a lifetime….. to stand on the
stage of Carnegie Hall and perform. (another drum roll…. Yes, THE Carnegie
Hall… she sighs..)
I have had the
good fortune to sing with OCS for almost a year now, and I must say that I am
truly blessed. I have never sung with a more committed, professional, spiritual
group of vocalists.
Our last Christmas
concert was primarily classical music, as we sang Vivaldi’s “Gloria” and “Lux Aeterna”
by Lauridsen. (We will be performing the Lux Aeterna at Carnegie).
We JUST (last
weekend) finished our spring concert series, which was a performance entitled
“Songs of Our Nation”.
This included a broad variety of music that spoke to the
amazing heritage of our country – from Patriotic tunes to songs from the hills
of Appalachia; 40’s swing to gospel; songs of praise, songs of war and protest,
songs of prayer, songs of love. It was a very moving performance. The concerts
were a testimony to the indomitable spirit of our country. We even had a
delightful piece called “Lambscapes”
which was an entertaining spoof of
classical variations on the old nursery rhyme “Mary had a Little Lamb” –
complete with costumes!
We greatly enjoyed ourselves, and our audience turnout was spectacular.
Please consider
making a donation to our fabulous organization so that we may go and “Rock the
Hall”
I have set a
personal goal of raising at least $11,000. (yes, I know that is significant!)
These funds will provide opportunities to many choral members who otherwise
could not fulfill this dream.
(hear me
whispering… Carnegie Hall… omgosh…)
The BONUS is that
not only is your contribution tax deductible, but you might also win one of
these cool prizes! (Tune back in next Tuesday as the prizes keep on comin’)
Let’s celebrate
the power of our knitting community, sending our singers to Carnegie Hall –
Thank you so
much!!

Is it at all possible to set up these donations in a PayPal account? For many people, that's the easiest way to give money, and I'm sure even more people would respond. Good luck!
